Spiritual awakening symptoms often begin long before people understand what is happening to them.

Some people notice heightened intuition. Others feel energy strongly, sense emotions around them, or experience moments they cannot logically explain. A few begin hearing guidance, receiving downloads, or feeling deeply disconnected from the version of themselves they have spent years pretending to be.

This week on Spiritual Awakening with Shaz, I sat down with intuitive business coach, hypnotherapist, healer, and Spiritual Rockstar podcast host Daniel John Hanneman to explore what awakening really looks like behind the social media filters and spiritual clichés.

Our conversation moved through spiritual awakening symptoms, channeling, healing, fear, business, intuition, emotional growth, and the pressure many spiritually sensitive people feel to hide who they truly are.

“You Learn Really Fast Not To Talk About That Stuff”

Daniel explained that unusual spiritual experiences followed him from childhood.

One memory still stayed vivid for him years later. After walking home from church, he sensed something dark following him. When he looked behind him, he remembered seeing paw prints in the snow trailing after him.

Experiences like that frightened him, especially because nobody around him understood what he was trying to explain.

During school, he spoke openly about sensing energy and unusual abilities. Instead of receiving support, people labelled him as unstable or strange.

That reaction shuts many intuitive children down.

A child senses spirit.
An empath picks up emotions.
Someone has a vivid dream that later happens exactly as they saw it.

Adults dismiss it.
Fear replaces curiosity.
Silence follows.

Daniel described how years passed before he fully embraced what he naturally sensed. Meditation, hypnosis, spiritual study, counselling work, and deep personal healing slowly opened the door again.

Eventually, he stopped trying to fit himself into everyone else’s understanding of reality.

Channeling Is Not What Most People Think

Hollywood has done spiritual people no favours.

Many people hear the word “channeling” and instantly imagine possession, dramatic voices, or something frightening. Daniel described it very differently.

For him, channeling feels like tuning into a frequency and allowing the energy to move naturally through his awareness. Sometimes words arrive clearly. Other moments feel more like vibration, emotion, or energetic knowing.

While discussing his connection with Jesus consciousness, he described the feeling as entering a state of liberation and deep heart expansion.

That part of the conversation resonated strongly with me because genuine divine connection feels peaceful, expansive, and grounded. Fear based energy creates contraction. The body recognises the difference immediately.

One point Daniel made stood out clearly:

“Trust it.”

Many people searching for spiritual connection keep waiting for certainty before allowing themselves to open fully. Their intuition already speaks constantly, yet fear interrupts the process before trust can develop.

Spiritual Awakening Symptoms Often Begins With Discomfort

Modern spirituality sometimes sells the illusion that awakening creates endless peace, happiness, and emotional perfection.

Reality usually looks messier.

An awakening can dismantle relationships, belief systems, identities, careers, and emotional coping mechanisms. Old wounds rise to the surface. Suppressed emotions demand attention. Patterns hidden for years suddenly become impossible to ignore.

Daniel spoke honestly about struggling with depression and anxiety earlier in life. Instead of pretending spirituality removed every challenge, he explained how those experiences shaped his compassion and understanding of others.

That honesty matters.

People connect more deeply to truth than performance.

A polished spiritual persona may attract attention temporarily, but authenticity creates genuine trust.

Fear Based Spirituality Creates Disconnection

One of the strongest sections of our discussion focused on fear.

Daniel shared stories about people who once embraced spirituality openly before later becoming consumed by fear based beliefs. In some cases, they began believing all spiritual practices were dangerous or “dark.”

Fear changes perception dramatically.

Once fear takes control, people stop listening to intuition and start searching for certainty, control, and rigid answers instead.

During the episode, Daniel said something powerful:

“People don’t trust that God is for them.”

Underneath many spiritual struggles sits a deep fear of abandonment, punishment, or rejection. Someone may speak constantly about love and light while secretly believing they are unsafe being fully themselves.

That conflict blocks growth.

Fear disconnects people from their own inner guidance faster than almost anything else.

Why Healers And Empaths Struggle With Visibility

The conversation eventually moved into business, healing work, and the challenges spiritual entrepreneurs face.

Daniel works extensively with healers, empaths, and intuitive people through his energy scanning sessions. According to him, many gifted people unconsciously fear visibility even while desperately wanting to help others.

Some fear criticism.
Others fear success.
A few worry people will judge their spiritual beliefs.

Years of suppression create hesitation.

Daniel explained that many spiritual business owners burn themselves out trying to follow formulas that completely clash with their natural energy. One person thrives speaking publicly, while another connects deeply through private sessions or written content.

No single business model works for everybody.

Authenticity matters more than performance.

At one point, Daniel said:

“People are looking for connection.”

That sentence alone explains why some spiritual businesses grow naturally while others feel forced.

People feel authenticity energetically.

Spiritual Gifts And Financial Success Can Exist Together

Money remains one of the biggest emotional triggers inside spiritual communities.

Many healers still believe charging properly for their work somehow makes them less spiritual. Others stay trapped in burnout because they associate struggle with purity or service.

Daniel challenged that mindset directly.

Helping people does not require self destruction.

Energy exchange matters.

A healer who constantly overgives while remaining financially exhausted eventually loses the capacity to support others effectively. Sustainable spiritual work requires boundaries, structure, and self respect alongside compassion.

One insight from Daniel captured this perfectly:

“You can thrive without having to do all the usual things.”

That perspective gives people permission to build businesses aligned with their nervous system, personality, and spiritual values instead of forcing themselves into exhausting hustle culture.

Spiritual Growth Requires Personal Responsibility

As the discussion deepened, we spoke about spirituality, accountability, and emotional maturity.

Many people want healing without responsibility. They search endlessly for somebody else to fix their emotions, clear their blocks, or save them from discomfort.

Real growth does not work that way.

Healing requires honesty.

Patterns continue repeating until someone becomes willing to examine their thoughts, behaviours, emotional reactions, and choices clearly.

Spirituality cannot become an excuse to avoid reality.

Awareness means very little without action behind it.

“Trust Being You”

Toward the end of the interview, I asked Daniel what message he most wanted listeners to take away from the episode.

His answer came through simply:

“Trust being you.”

No performance.
No pretending.
And no forcing yourself into someone else’s spiritual identity.

Just trust your own connection, your own gifts, and your own path enough to stop hiding from yourself.

That message probably explains spiritual awakening better than any complicated definition ever could.
