Spiritual Awakening After Trauma – A Conversation with Maruis Aldridge

Spiritual awakening after trauma does not begin with light. It begins with collapse. In this episode, Marius Aldridge shares how suicidal ideation, anxiety, complex PTSD, and years of suppression became the catalyst for his awakening.

His journey did not look glamorous. It looked human.

When Trauma Reaches Breaking Point

Marius describes 17 December 2014 as the day everything shifted. He was suicidal and he had planned his exit. Anxiety and depression had consumed him. Multiple diagnoses had stacked up over time.

However, something interrupted that trajectory.

He made a last-minute doctor’s appointment. Unexpectedly, his regular doctor was on duty that day. That moment became a flicker of light in what felt like total darkness.

From that point forward, he realised no one was coming to rescue him. He had to choose himself.

That decision marked the true beginning of his spiritual awakening after trauma.

The Cost of Living for Other People

Before healing, Marius identified as a workaholic and a people pleaser. He had built an identity around external expectations.

Growing up in conservative South Africa during apartheid, he lived in a deeply religious and masculine environment. As a gay man, softness did not feel safe. Compassion did not feel safe. Authenticity did not feel safe.

Therefore, he adapted.

He suppressed emotion, his identity and his trauma.

Eventually, the body responded. As he reflects in the conversation, suppressed trauma does not disappear. It surfaces. In his case, it manifested as severe mental health struggles.

This is often how spiritual awakening after trauma begins. The system can no longer hold what has been buried.

Healing Is a Zigzag, Not a Straight Line

One of the strongest themes in this conversation is that healing is not linear.

Marius describes it as a zigzag. You rise, you fall, and you revisit old wounds. Yet when you step back, you realise you are still moving forward.

For a full year, he could not leave the house due to anxiety. He began with small, practical steps:

  • A yoga DVD for anxiety and depression

  • One hour walks outside each day

  • Gradual re-engagement with life

Later, he discovered mindfulness through a simple poster in a car park. That introduction led to mindfulness-based therapy, which eventually replaced pharmaceutical medication.

Slowly, consistently, he rebuilt himself.

Importantly, he emphasises there is no timeframe for healing. Comparison only delays progress. Healing unfolds at its own pace.

A Catalyst Moment at Auschwitz

Although his recovery began years earlier, a visit to Auschwitz in 2022 deepened his awakening.

Walking through the site in silence, he experienced a profound energetic shift. Having grown up in apartheid-era South Africa, witnessing racism at its extreme forced reflection.

He recognised that his empathy, queerness, and softness were antidotes to hate.

From that moment, he began following what he describes as spiritual breadcrumbs. His awakening expanded beyond mental health recovery into spiritual purpose.

The Christ Consciousness Experience

During a psychedelic yoga retreat, Marius had an encounter that changed the direction of his life.

In a vision, he met Jesus Christ. Rather than being given Christ consciousness, he was told:

“You don’t need Christ consciousness. You are Christ consciousness.”

He describes this as ego death. Love over ego became the foundation of his work.

Four days later, he began writing his book.

From Breakdown to Book

Marius never planned to be an author. However, the writing flowed through him. He wrote the book entirely on his phone. Interestingly, he did not write it in chronological order. Yet when completed, a consistent theme ran through it.

The message is clear:

Where there is light, there cannot be darkness.

His book, From Broken to Brilliant, reflects his spiritual awakening after trauma and offers hope to those in their own dark night.

Spiritual Response Therapy and Service

Today, Marius practises and teaches Spiritual Response Therapy. He describes his first session as physically and emotionally intense, yet profoundly liberating.

He emphasises that he does not heal clients. Instead, he holds space while they heal themselves.

That distinction matters.

Awakening is not about being saved. It is about choosing yourself.

The Message to His Younger Self

When asked what he would tell his younger self, his answer was simple:

You are perfect just the way you are.
You are lovable. and you are compassionate.
Finally, you are going to do great things.

That message extends beyond him. It speaks to anyone navigating spiritual awakening after trauma.

Final Reflection

Spiritual awakening is rarely comfortable. It often begins in crisis. However, as Marius’ story demonstrates, breakdown can become breakthrough.

Healing takes time. It requires choice. It requires courage.

Yet where there is light, darkness cannot remain.

If you are in your own dark night, consider this:

You are not broken.
You are becoming.
