Breaking Free from Toxic Relationships: Awakening from Narcissistic Control & Gaslighting

Toxic relationships can come in many forms—romantic partners, family, friends, co-workers, or even within communities. While most people immediately think of toxic romantic relationships, the reality is toxic dynamics can exist in any area of your life.

But the most overlooked toxic relationship? The one you have with yourself.

That inner voice that tells you, “I’m not good enough. I don’t deserve better. I have to settle.” These negative thoughts create cycles of self-doubt, people-pleasing, and emotional exhaustion, making it easier for external toxic relationships to take hold.

If you find yourself constantly giving, constantly sacrificing, and constantly feeling unworthy—this blog is for you. Let’s explore how to recognise, heal, and break free from toxic relationships so you can reclaim your self-worth and step into empowerment.

Signs You’re in a Toxic Relationship

Toxic relationships often start subtly, making them difficult to recognise. Here are some common signs:

You feel emotionally drained after spending time with them.
They control or manipulate you, making you doubt yourself (gaslighting).
You walk on eggshells to avoid conflict or outbursts.
They isolate you from friends, family, or opportunities.
You’ve lost confidence in yourself—you feel stuck and unsure of your worth.
You blame yourself for their toxic behaviour.

💡 If any of these resonate, take a deep breath. Awareness is the first step to healing.

Coercive Control: The Silent Trap

One of the most dangerous forms of toxic relationships is coercive control—where a person slowly gains total dominance over their partner’s life.

This often involves:
Financial control (restricting your access to money).
Dictating what you wear, where you go, or who you talk to.
Making decisions for you and discouraging independence.
Using guilt or fear to keep you from leaving.

Coercive control isn’t always obvious in the beginning. It starts as “concern” (“I just want to keep you safe”), but over time, it strips away your freedom. The longer you stay, the harder it becomes to leave.

But there is hope.

The Role of Spiritual Awakening in Healing

Many people wake up to the reality of their toxic relationships during their spiritual awakening.

When you start questioning everything—your beliefs, your past, and the way people treat you.
You reconnect with your intuition and feel nudged to step into your power.
Begin to realise you deserve better and begin setting boundaries.

When you start rediscovering who you truly are, toxic relationships naturally begin to fall away. The key is to trust yourself and take small, intentional steps toward healing.

How to Break Free from Toxic Relationships

1️⃣ Acknowledge the reality of your situation
Denial is what keeps toxic cycles alive. Say it out loud: “This relationship is not healthy for me.” You don’t need anyone else’s validation—your feelings are enough.

2️⃣ Detach from emotional manipulation
Gaslighting is a powerful tool used in toxic relationships. Detach emotionally and trust your own version of events. If you feel confused, write things down in a journal so you have proof of your experiences.

3️⃣ Set firm boundaries
Boundaries are non-negotiable lines that others cannot cross. Start small:
✅ “I will no longer respond to negative comments.”
✅ “I will take time for myself without guilt.”
✅ “I will not explain my choices to those who disrespect me.”

4️⃣ Rebuild self-worth through daily affirmations
Toxic relationships break down self-esteem. Reprogram your mind with empowering affirmations:
💜 “I am worthy of love and respect.”
💜 “I trust my intuition to guide me.”
💜 “I release toxic relationships with ease.”

5️⃣ Seek support and healing
You don’t have to do this alone. Healing from toxic relationships often requires energy work, coaching, or therapy to reprogram limiting beliefs. Consider:
Reiki healing (to clear emotional blockages).
EFT tapping (to release trauma responses).
NLP breakthrough coaching (to rewire subconscious patterns).
